Virginia’s Eastern Shore is on the mid-Atlantic coast of the United States. It is a narrow 70-mile spit of land surrounded by water on three sides and is the southernmost tip of the Delmarva Peninsula (Delaware, Maryland, Virginia). The Chesapeake Bay, America’s largest estuary, forms the western edge of Virginia’s Eastern Shore and the Atlantic Ocean forms the eastern border. It is connected to the Virginia mainland in the south by the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel. To the north is the state of Maryland.

This small regional airport has limited commercial flights. It’s an hour from Chincoteague, the northernmost town on Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

CHESAPEAKE BAY BRIDGE-TUNNEL
This engineering marvel connects mainland Virginia to Virginia’s Eastern Shore and measures 17.6 miles from shore to shore. The crossing includes more than 12 miles of bridges, causeways, low trestles and two mile-long tunnels. Note that the Bridge-Tunnel is a toll road and can be affected by inclement weather.

The Local Scoop
Located on the northernmost portion of Virginia’s Eastern Shore, Accomack County covers approximately 476 square miles of rich farmland, undisturbed beaches, expanses of marsh and forest, and small towns rich in history and culture. The county has miles of shoreline on both the Chesapeake Bay on the west and the Atlantic Ocean on the east, constituting one of the largest unspoiled wetlands habitats in the world. The towns of Accomac and Onancock are designated State Historic Districts that feature restored Colonial architecture. Recreational opportunities attract fishermen, boaters, and beach-lovers to Accomack County and its pristine barrier islands.
Northampton County is the southern 35 miles of Virginia’s Eastern Shore. Northampton County contains numerous natural and cultural sites, including four large public parks; County owned, Indiantown Park and Edward S. Brinkley Nature Preserve; federally owned Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge and state owned, Kiptopeke State Park, both located at the southern end of the county. Historic towns, such as Eastville, Cheriton and Cape Charles contain buildings that speak to over 350 years of architectural design.
